DCPD: AN INTERESTING ALTERNATIVE TO R-RIM
Interest in DCPD ( dicyclopentadiene ) as an alternative to conventional RIM moulding has been gathering in momentum over recent months.
This is an interesting material since it allows very large thin wall mouldings to be achieved without the usually very large investment needed for high output metering machinery and high tonnage presses.
Closed mould injection with pressures as low as 2/3 bar also means that the necessity for expensive tooling can be avoided. Indeed, the material can be tailored to suit available equipment enabling smaller moulders to remain competitive.
OMS Group has been involved with DCPD since it first entered the market place and we have sold several machines in this period. This experience has paid dividends and has allowed us to supply equipment specially configured to get the best from the material.
Polymoon, a leading supplier in the Czech Republic and Taylor Engineering and Plastics, one of the UK’s foremost RIM and injection moulders for technical products have recently taken delivery of Ecomaster 2 100/50 metering units which have a working output range from 300 to 1400 gr/sec.
They are equipped with special accessories to guarantee best results are achieved:
- magnetic couplings to agitators and metering pumps
- nitrogen pressurisation system and moisture traps
- special self cleaning filters
- IP55 protection barriers and leakage sensors for safe working
- precise temperature control of the material ( +/- 1˚C )
The combination of a material capable of producing Class 1 finish for painted exterior parts for passenger, light and heavy goods vehicles,tractors, excavators and fork lift trucks and a fully developed processing machine is certainly a winning one.
